When should I replace my dentures?

Every 6-10 years, depending on wear and tear. After about 10 years, dentures begin to break down and become porous, creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and other nasties.

Do I need dentures if I am on a soft diet?

Absolutely. Without dentures keeping the jaws in the right alignment, your natural swallowing reflex is inhibited. Even if you are on a soft-food diet, dentures are an important part of maintaining your health.

Why should I replace my dentures?

As dentures become old and porous, bacteria become ingrained within the material. Recent studies have shown that the biggest cause of aspiration pneumonia – which is a leading cause of death among the elderly – is bacteria from oral plaque. So having clean dentures is very important for your overall health!

If your weight has recently changed by more than 5 kg or you have recently had teeth removed, this will also change the way your dentures fit, so a reline is most likely necessary. Ill-fitting dentures can cause discomfort, sores and infections.
